Ways to Eat Cantaloupe

Eaten raw, alone or in fruit salads and other fruit dishes.

Selecting the Best

Quality cantaloupe has large webbing on the outer skin, and is a nice orange color inside. Make sure the stem area is slightly soft when pressed, smooth and rounded, but firm elsewhere. Avoid cantaloupe that has a rough stem area and any stem remaining. If you find a stem or rough stem area, the cantaloupe was harvested to early and may not be very sweet. Cantaloupe is grown on soil, so you may see a slightly whitened area on one side of the cantaloupe. This does not affect the quality of the product. The aroma of the cantaloupe should have a sweet smell about it, especially around the stem area.

Availability

Cantaloupe is available from Arizona, California, Oregon, Texas and Washington. Seasons are from Mid-May until October. Central and South America ship cantaloupe year-round. But the quality and sweetness are not as good as those grown in the United States during the summer season.

Did you know...?

Cantaloupe's came from Asia. Settlers brought them to America from Europe. Are cantaloupes from the melon family? Yes, but an American grown cantaloupe, as Americans call them, is not real cantaloupe. Real cantaloupe does not have webbing, but instead has smooth to slightly rough textured skin. American grown cantaloupe is actually muskmelon.
