Ways to Eat Watermelon
Eaten raw, alone or in fruit salads and other
fruit dishes.
Selecting the Best
Quality watermelon should be firm, heavy and
even-shaped. When slapped with the palm of your hand, you should hear a deep
tone. Slight yellowing of the underside is acceptable. When cut, it should have
a fresh look and firm texture. The seeds, if seeded type, should be hard and
mature looking. Avoid watermelons that are pale green or white. Some scaring is
ok, but avoid product that has many bruises or cuts and any soft spots.
Availability
Watermelon is available year-round. Watermelons
are grown in over 40 states ranging from Arizona, California, Texas, Georgia,
Florida and many others. California seasons are from Mid-May through October.
